It was 9am London time on November the 25th, 1984 at Sarm West Studios that they began to arrive, Duran Duran, Spandau Ballet, Paul Young, Culture, George Michael, Kool and the Gang, Sting, Bono and Adam Clayton of U2, Glenn Gregory of Heaven and his bandmate Martyn Ware, Phil Collins of Genesis, Paul Weller of the Style Council, Francis Rossi and Rick Parfitt of Status Quo, Jody Watley of Shalamar, Bananarama, Marilyn… the now classic “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” was recorded.

A few things about the recording session:

– Singer Marilyn showed up but was not invited
– When Boy George didn’t show up with his bandmates Midge Ure had to call to get him out of bed and demand he hop on the Concorde and get to London to sing his part.
– The opening of the song uses a sample of The Hurting by Tears for Fears
– Despite being singers themselves; neither Geldof nor Ure had a solo line on the song
